Introduction: My Wine Life
My wine exposure started at a very
young age, within my family. My dad would end the day with a Jack and Ginger,
but my mom has always been a red wine drinker. Coming from an Italian family
alcohol was integral to our family dynamic and wine especially. With family
meals taking place on the weekend, red, whites, and bubblies for celebration
were always around. As my siblings and cousins and I got older our families would
allow us to try different wines, which was wasted on us in our youth. My mom
was a fan of Silver Oak and after looking it up I’m disappointed I don’t remember
trying it.
Two summers ago my extended family
spent 2 weeks seeing a few cities in Italy. In the town of Castiglioncello we
would make family meal and the center piece was half a carboy of wine. This
large amount of cheap wine was contrasted with a harshness against the wine
tasting we were lucky enough to be part of in the vineyards around Florence.
The only wine I remember well was a sangiovese, which has been my favorite wine
to date.
After living in Spain for a year my
Aunt and Uncle began a wine distribution business in the States. As a teenager
this seemed like the greatest job for a young couple to have. The wine IQ
quizzes have been enjoyable because as teenagers that’s how we viewed our aunt
and uncle. They would talk about their sommelier experience and taste their
wine a certain way. I’m excited that from this class I’ll be able to discuss
their work in more detail, and debunk the wine snob stigma.
